The Cripple of Inishmaan(F)
Allred Theater, Val Browning Center

The Cripple of Inishmaan tells the 1930s story of a crippled young man named Billy who has dreams of escaping his remote town on the Irish coast, including the pettiness of townsfolk like his eccentric aunts and the village gossip, Johnnypateenmike. His opportunity starts to materialize when a film crew arrives looking for actors, and soon Billy has visions of himself in Hollywood pursuing the American Dream. Billy's subsequent exploits to the New World and back form a surprising and wildly funny tale of what it means to be a man . . . and to be Irish. Written by Martin McDonagh, The Cripple of Inishmaan originally opened in December 1996 in London at the Royal National Theatre and was remounted in 1998 at The Public Theater in New York City. Recently, The Cripple of Inishmaan was remounted in 2013 for a sold-out run at the West End in London with Daniel Radcliffe ("Harry Potter") starring as Billy. With all its popularity, it transferred with Radcliffe to the Cort Theatre in New York City for a limited three-month run with great success. McDonagh is a renowned playwright, director and screenwriter who is considered one of today's most important Irish playwrights. He has been nominated for Tony and Drama Desk Awards, and he received the Critics' Circle Theatre Award for Most Promising Playwright in 1996 for his play, The Beauty Queen of Leenane. He also received a Laurence Olivier Award in 2003 for his work, The Lieutenant of Inishmore. His films include Seven Psychopaths and In Bruges. His most recent awarding winning film was This year's Oscar nominated Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. Director Tracy Callahan attended the revival on Broadway starring Daniel Radcliffe as Cripple Billy and felt that "The Cripple of Inishmaan is important to the students because the Irish form of humor is something that we don't see enough of on stage today," The Ireland of shamrocks and leprechauns is not a particularly full picture of Irish culture or humor" "Also, when I read it and then saw it onstage, I thought, 'This is one of the funniest and heartwarming plays I've read and ever seen.' I know that our students love to laugh, and I thought this would be a great choice to evoke that." "The play is considered dark humor but it also has a great deal of heart." Callahan has a great interest in Contemporary Irish Theatre having studied in Galway at the beginning of her teaching career and directed over a dozen Irish authored plays.

Dialogues of the Carmelites(Th)
Allred Theater, Val Browning Center
10/25/2018   7:30 PM
PURCHASE TICKETS

The Music area in the Department of Performing Arts will present Francis Poulenc's opera The Dialogues of the Carmelites, based on true events of the lives and the untimely deaths (beheadings) of the Carmelite Nuns during the French Revolution in Paris, c. 1790. The opera will be fully costumed and will incorporate lighting and set design from Theatre staff and faculty. The opera will be accompanied, for the first time, by piano and a small orchestral ensemble of three to five players. This opera production will lend a historical perspective to our audiences on two levels; first, the tragic events surrounding the time frame of the French Revolution, set against Poulenc's beautiful musical setting, and secondly, the historical perspective of Catholic doxology during that era. Intended audiences are 13 and older due to the dramatic and emotional content of the material.
