The Royal Academy of Music in London guitar professor Fabio Zanon, is an active international soloist and gives masterclasses at many prestigious venues in North America, Europe and Brazil. Winner of the Francisco Tarrega Prize and the Guitar Foundation of America competitions, Mr. Zanon will be involved in intense rehearsals with WSU Chamber Choir students and Dr. Mark Henderson during his residence in Ogden. This collaboration will culminate in a rare performance of the Romancero Gitano. In 1951, Spanish composer Castelnuovo-Tedesco chose seven poems from Federico Garcia Lorca's 1921 collection Poema del canto jondo for his chorus and guitar cycle. Romancero Gitano is one of almost 100 compositions he composed for guitar, writing that reflects his long association with the virtuoso Spanish guitarist Andrés Segovia. ["The Ballad of Three Rivers," the guitar depicts the rushing waters of the Guadalquivir River. "The Guitar" intones the power of the instrument's five strings-"five-swords"-, and the aggressive "Dagger" menaces with its dissonances. "Saeta," a tender song honoring the Virgin Mary, who is dressed in her glittering finest and bathed in twinkling candlelight. "Paso" is a vision of the statue of the tortured Christ. "Memento" dances a breezy tango, and "Dance," a Carmen's nocturnal seduction. "Castanet," the song erupts in flames, and jota fulfill the burning flamenco spirit.]
