LAWRENCE, Kan. – The UMKC softball team (6-16) finished the Jayhawk Invitational on Sunday with a 12-7 win over the Phoenix.
In a first inning that took 50 minutes, Green Bay handed UMKC six walks in the top of the inning before the Roos dealt the Phoenix two of their own.
Freshman Sydney Garcia (Kansas City, Mo.) got the game started with a single to third base. After the first pitch to Kendra Leach (Easton, Kan.), Garcia stole second and Leach would eventually be walked. A wild pitch advanced the runners and the next three Roos would be walked.
After back-to-back outs, Abbi Johnson (Midwest City, Okla.) and Faith Willis (Kearney, Mo.) consecutively drew walks. Going back to the top of the batting order, Garcia doubled against the right field wall but was left on base, as the Roos finished the top of the first inning with a 6-0 lead.
Green Bay responded in the bottom half of the inning with back-to-back singles followed by a double. Two more singles and two walks would cut into the Roos’ lead to make it a 6-4 game after one inning.
In the second inning, sophomore Bri Sims (Rowlett, Texas) bombed a solo home run to left field, and pitcher Lia Lombardini (Chesterton, Ind.) held the Phoenix scoreless, to give the Roos a 7-4 lead through two innings.
Each team scored in the third inning before Ashlin O’Brien (Fond du Lac, Wis.) smashed a two-run homer off of the scoreboard in center field, giving UMKC the 10-5 cushion.
The Roos added another run in the sixth inning, but back-to-back home runs to center field by the Phoenix made it an 11-7 game, bringing Lynsey Conner (Peggs, Okla.) to the circle for UMKC.
UMKC would add one more run in the seventh inning, finishing the game with 12 runs on 16 hits and just one error.
The Roos will return to Arrocha Ballpark next weekend for the Rock Chalk Challenge and face Kansas, Tulsa, Southeast Missouri and Omaha.
