About the Roos

UMKC (9-18, 4-10) is led in scoring by junior Samantha Waldron (Omaha, Neb.), who is averaging 12.2 points per game, shooting 39.9 percent (119-for-298) from the field, including 34.0 percent (53-for-156) from behind the three-point arc. Junior Kiana Law (Pittsburgh, Pa.) is leading the team in boards, grabbing 5.8 per game.

As a team, the Roos are currently second in the WAC in field goal percentage (41.8 percent), fourth in offensive rebounds (12.9 per game), fifth in assists (12.5 per game) and sixth in blocked shots (2.0 per game).

The Roos enter the 2017 WAC Tournament on a two-game winning streak after finishing the regular season with a 71-55 victory at Chicago State on March 4. Senior Kelsey Barrett (Kansas City, Mo.) led UMKC with a career-high 16 points on 6-for-9 shooting, including four 3-pointers. Ceidra Coleman (Bryan, Texas) finished with 10 points, seven assists and six rebounds. The Roos have won three of their last four games. 

UMKC closed its home portion of the schedule with a 77-65 victory over Grand Canyon on Feb. 25. Redshirt junior India Johnson (Overland Park, Kan.) led the Roos in scoring with 19 points off the bench, going 5-for-11 from the field, 3-for-6 from behind the arc and a perfect 6-for-6 from the charity stripe.

For the first time in nearly two months, the Roos were healthy and used its depth to deal Chicago State a 62-53 setback on Feb. 18 to open their final home stand of the season. Kristen Moore (Chicago, Ill.) had a double-double, scoring 12 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. In her first game back from an injury, Coleman tallied a team-high 14 points, going 7-for-10 from the field with three assists and one steal.

Johnson made her second game-winner of the season in the 66-63 win over Utah Valley. Her half-court heave banked in off the glass as time expired in the fourth quarter to give the Roos the victory on Jan. 14.

Moore recorded a career-high 22 points in the loss to Seattle on Jan. 12 and scored 19 in the win over Utah Valley. She was given WAC Women’s Basketball Player of the Week honors for her performance.

Waldron led the way for UMKC at the Roo Holiday Classic, totaling 55 points over the two games, including 37 in the loss against Southern Illinois on Dec. 19.

Johnson was the star of the show in UMKC’s road win over Abilene Christian on Dec. 3, scoring a game-high 19 points, including 14 in the second half and overtime. She shot 53.8 percent (7-for-13) from the floor, knocking down five three-pointers, including the game-winner in overtime with 1.7 seconds remaining.

In a big road win at Wichita State on Nov. 11, Law hit a shot in the lane with 1.2 seconds left in the game to give UMKC the 56-54 victory. Waldron scored 22 points in the game, knocking down 4-of-8 three points shots. Waldron’s performance against the Shockers earned her the College Sports Madness WAC Player of the Week honor on Nov. 11.

In UMKC’s season opener against Tulsa on Nov. 11, three Roos reached double figures. Law notched a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds, Moore scored 16, and Lyndsay Leikem (Tucson, Ariz.) contributed 13 points off the bench.
