Birmingham, Ala.- Charlotte came out with a sense of desire in the Conference USA series finale against UAB on Saturday afternoon defeating the Blazers 1-0 off a solo home run by Jessica Plemmons in the top of the seventh.  Charlotte moves to 17-24 on the season and an 8-12 clip in league play.  UAB falls to 29-20 with a 13-7 mark in C-USA play.

One run was all the Niners needed for a shutout victory against the Blazers in the series finale after being shutout in the doubleheader yesterday.  "It was a great win," said Aimee DeVos.  "Like many games this season, they just never quit.  I am proud of their effort to come back after two tough games last night.  Lexi and Jackie worked a great game and Jes' home run was clutch."

Charlotte and UAB were scoreless through the first six innings until Jessica Plemmons (Lexington, N.C./ North Davidson HS) stepped to the plate.  In the first pitch of the at-bat in the top of the seventh, Plemmons sent it over the right center field wall.  Plemmons' ninth home run of the season proved to be the only run the Niners needed.

The Niners had an opportunity in the top of the fourth inning to scratch across a run but came up empty.  Natalie Capone (St. Charles, Ill./ St. Charles North) picked up the first hit for the Niners sending a 1-2 pitch into left field.  Capone moved up to second on a Samantha Slade (Apex, N.C./ Apex HS) sacrifice bunt.  Capone was stranded in scoring position to end the threat.

The Blazer attack in the bottom of the fourth inning was extinguished by Lexi Betancourt (Garner, N.C./ West Johnson HS) picking up three punch outs in the inning.  The Blazers' Pearson doubled to shallow center field followed by an infield single put runners at second and third with two outs.  Betancourt got a full count swing and a miss to end the threat.

Lexi Betancourt (16-12) picked up a career high 16th victory tossing her sixth shutout of the season scattering three hits through seven innings.  UAB's starter Leigh Streetman was tagged with the loss giving up the big fly in the seventh dropped to 18-11 on the season tossing six innings allowing the lone run off two hits and striking out eight.

Charlotte will step out of league play to face UNC Greensboro on the road for a midweek doubleheader.  The Spartans took the midweek doubleheader at Charlotte April 16.
