CHARLOTTE, N.C. – After a successful end to the Conference USA series at Florida Atlantic with an 11-1 victory, the Charlotte 49ers get back to action on Tuesday night ending a five-game road trip at Gardner-Webb in Boiling Springs. Tuesday marks the one and only meeting between the two teams with Charlotte carrying a 19-3 record against the Bulldogs all-time.

Charlotte (9-24-1) heads to Gardner-Webb after taking Sunday’s series-finale at FAU with an 11-1 victory as Conference USA’s ten-run rule on Sunday came into play. Senior Brock Hudgens threw a complete game allowing just one run on two hits with six strikeouts on the mound. Brett Lang and T.J. Nichting would each collect four hits in the win as Charlotte racked up a new season-high with 16.

Nichting would end up going 8-for-12 hitting .667 over the weekend at Florida Atlantic.

The Niners scored 10 of their 11 runs with two outs starting with three in the top of the third. Lang followed Derek Gallello’s single to left with his own before Nichting doubled off the wall in right to drive in both Gallello and Lang for a 2-0 lead. Des Roberts later followed with his own double to right-center to score Nichting for a three-run lead.

In the four-run fourth, Jordan Hudson’s leadoff walk paid off two hitters later as Mikal Hill doubled to right-center. Lang followed for an infield single to short before Sherer dropped in a base hit to left. On Sherer’s single, a fielding error in left by FAU, allowed the fourth run to score pushing the advantage out to seven.

After FAU got on the board with their run in the fifth, Charlotte got it right back in the sixth as Lang singled home Gallello for the only run not scored with two outs. The Niners would enforce the ten-run rule with a Gallello run-scoring single to center before a wild pitch scored both Hill and Gallello scored on the same play. Gallello used head’s up base running from second that provided the 11th and final run for the Niners.

Florida Atlantic took two-of-three over the weekend using a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth Friday by Brendon Sanger and a complete-game three-hitter by starter Jeremy Strawn on Saturday.

Gardner-Webb (16-20) will enter the non-conference tilt after dropping two-of-three at Charleston Southern over the weekend. The Bulldogs sandwiched an 18-6 drubbing of CSU in between a pair of 11-4 and 5-3 losses on Friday and Sunday.

Matt Simmons leads GWU hitting .357 through 26 games while JJ Nazzaro and Scott Coleman are each hitting .307 through 34 and 35 games, respectively.

Charlotte sends RHP Brandon Vogler (1-1, 3.06) for Tuesday night’s contest at 6:00 p.m. Gardner-Webb will decide between RHP Jeremy Walker (2-0, 0.00) or RHP Hunter Smith (3-1, 3.76) to face the Niners.
