CONWAY, SC – Behind goals by Giuseppe Gentile and Aidan Kirkbride, the 15th-ranked Charlotte 49ers (2-1) defeated 12th-ranked Coastal Carolina (1-2), 2-1, on the road.

“It was a huge win,” Charlotte coach Kevin Langan said. “It was a wonderful game of soccer between two strong teams. I was very proud of the guys and the way they responded after Tuesday’s game. This was a quality road win.”

Charlotte took a 1-0 lead when Gentile headed in a Brandt Bronico cross in the 53rd minute. Gentile’s goal was his third of the season and the 22nd of his career.

In the 68th minute, Coastal Carolina tied the score at one when Justin Portillo’s corner kick found Sergio Camargo who passed to Pedro Ribeiro who put the ball in the back of the net from 10 yards out.

The 49ers regained the lead for good when David Mayer passed to Monbo Bokar who headed the ball to Kirkbride who put the ball just inside the far post into the back of the net from 12 yards out in the 73rd minute. Kirkbride’s goal was his first of the season and the seventh of his career.

Charlotte finished the game with nine shots. Gentile led the 49ers with three shots.

Charlotte’s Thomas Allen nearly scored the game’s first goal but his header in the 20th minute was cleared off the line by a Coastal Carolina defender. In the 42nd minute, Will Mayhew sent a shot wide.

In the 58th minute, Anthony Perez had his shot blocked by a Coastal Carolina defender. In the 60th minute, Gentile’s shot was blocked. In the final 10 minutes of the game, Tyler Gibson, Bokar and Gentile each had shots that were either wide or saved by Coastal Carolina goalkeeper Devin Cook.

Charlotte returns to action next weekend when they travel to Birmingham, Alabama to play in the UAB Soccer for a Cure Classic, September 13-15. First, the 49ers begin Conference USA play in the Classic when they play the host team 18th-ranked UAB, Friday, September 13 at 8 pm.
