Sam Houston State forward Steven Werner has been named the first Southland Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week of the new season, the league office announced Monday.

In his first NCAA Division I performance, the transfer from McLennan College led the Bearkats with 20 points and 16 rebounds in a 76-42 victory over Howard Payne last Friday in the team's season opener.

The junior from Fort Worth, Texas (Birdville H.S.), made 9 of 11 shots from the floor (81.8 percent) and added two assists and one block in 22 minutes. His performance was one of four double-doubles in the league the opening weekend of the season and was the only 20-point game.

Werner was an all-conference forward at McLennan, leading the team to a 28-5 record and a  North Texas Junior College runner-up finish in 2011. He was a starter on McLennan's 27-5 conference championship team as a freshman.

"Steve is a strong, athletic guy with a nice touch around the basket," head coach Jason Hooten said. "He can score both inside and out and had a great start Saturday night in our opener."

Sam Houston now heads on the road for a game Wednesday night at Notre Dame.

The Sam Houston men will not return home again until Tuesday November 29 when they play host to Dallas Christian at 7 p.m. at Johnson Coliseum.
