TEMPE, Ariz. – Duke sophomore Celine Boutier and senior Laetitia Beck opened the 2014 PING/ASU Invitational Friday in the top six overall of the individual leaderboard at the 6,223-yard, par 72 Arizona State University Karsten Golf Course.

Boutier, who is coming off her first collegiate victory at the Bryan National Collegiate, turned in a three-under-par, 69, and is tied third overall.  A native of Montrouge, France, Boutier is only one shot off the lead, which is held by South Carolina’s Katelyn Dambaugh (68) and UCLA’s Ani Gulugian (68).

With four birdies over her first 10 holes, Boutier held a four-under-par ledger through 11 holes, before suffering her only bogey of the day on the 150-yard, par three 12th hole.  The 2013 All-America selection carded six straight pars to finish with a 69.

A product of Caesarea, Israel, Beck opened with a two-under-par, 70, and is tied sixth with five other golfers.  She netted birdies on No. 5 and No. 7 to reach two-under-par, but had bogeys on the eighth and 12th holes to drop back to even par.  Beck closed with birdies on No. 14 and No. 17 to finish the day at two-under-par, 70.  She hit eight fairways, 14 greens and had 30 putts on the day.


As a team, Duke snapped a six-round streak of leading tournaments as the Blue Devils carded a two-over-par, 290, and is fifth overall.  Duke is only six shots out of the lead, which is held by Washington with a four-under-par, 284.  Rounding out the top 10 is Arizona State (287), South Carolina (288), Arizona (288), Duke (290), Oregon (291), UCLA (291), California (291), Texas (294) and Stanford (295).

Freshman Yu Liu opened her day with a birdie on hole No. 2, but closed the front nine with bogeys on No. 6, No. 7 and No. 9 to make the turn at two-over-par, 37.  Liu, who is out of Beijing, China, started the back with a birdie on No. 10 and three straight pars.  A bogey and double-bogey on the 14th and 15th holes dropped her back to four-over-par.  Liu closed her day with a birdie on the 370-yard, par four 18th to finish with a 75.  She is tied 40th overall.

Both senior Alejandra Cangrejo and freshman Sandy Choi each turned in rounds of four-over-par, 76, in the opening round.  Cangrejo, who is out of Bogota, Colombia, held an even-par ledger through 10 holes following her second birdie of the day on the 478-yard, par five No. 10.  She suffered four bogeys over her final eight holes to finish with a 76.  She is tied 48th overall, after hitting 13 greens, 12 fairways and nothing 35 putts.

A product of San Diego, Calif., Choi was held without a birdie on day one as she registered four bogeys along with 14 pars.  She is tied 48th, while hitting 12 fairways, seven greens and 27 putts.  Junior Irene Jung was playing as an individual and shot an 80 Friday.

Duke will tee off Saturday in the second round beginning at 11:40 (ET) with Arizona and Oregon.
