WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind.—Duke University’s Trey Adamson and Immanuel Kerr-Brown captured their first dual victories of the season as the Blue Devils fell to No. 21 Purdue 27-7 in their season-opening dual. The Blue Devils continue their weekend with a pair of duals against Indiana and Cleveland State Sunday.
Duke (0-1) jumped out to a 4-0 lead with a 14-6 major decision from Adamson at 174 pounds. The redshirt sophomore used a pair of takedowns in the opening period for a 4-1 lead and never looked back as he added five more points in the second period to take a 9-4 lead en route to the eight-point win.
After the Boilermakers rattled off eight straight wins, Kerr-Brown picked up the Blue Devils’ second win of the afternoon with a 7-3 decision at 157 pounds. After a scoreless first period, the redshirt junior captain went down 3-0 early in the second period before responding with consecutive reversals for the 4-3 lead with two minutes left to wrestle. Kerr-Brown, on bottom to start, added one more reversal and a riding time point to earn his fourth win of the year and 33rd of his career.
The Blue Devils’ trio of true freshmen – Jacob Kasper (184), Evan Botwin (125) and Conner Bass (149) – turned in solid performances in their first collegiate dual. Kasper attacked from the start and grabbed a 3-2 lead after two periods before Tanner Lynde rallied with four points in the final stanza for the 6-4 decision.
At 125, Botwin battled in a 7-2 decision to No. 19 Camden Eppert, while Bass suffered a heartbreaking overtime setback. Bass lead 4-1 nearing the end of the match before Brandon Nelson scored five points in the final 29 seconds to tie the match 5-5 and force overtime. Nelson scored a takedown with eight seconds left in the sudden victory period to hand Bass his second loss of the season.
Redshirt sophomore Conner Hartmann suffered his first defeat of the season to 16th-ranked Braden Atwood, while Marcus Cain dropped a hard-fought 5-4 decision to Chad Welch at 165.
The Blue Devils are back in action tomorrow with duals against Indiana and Cleveland State. The match with the Hoosiers is set for 11 a.m., on the Big Ten Digital Network. Duke and the Vikings meet at 1 p.m.
