MACOMB, Ill. - Western Illinois softball drops two to Summit League foe UMKC on day one of the series. The winner of Sunday's (May 6) game three will receive the final bid to the Summit League Championships which takes place next week (May 10-12). The 2012 senior class of Ashley Campbell and Jamie Goss will be honored at 11:30 a.m. with the game slated to begin at 12 p.m.
UMKC 6, Western Illinois Softball 1
After trading zeros with Western Illinois in the first three innings, UMKC used five hits and two errors to stake a commanding 4-0 lead in the fourth and added another two runs in the fifth on one hit and two errors.
Western Illinois remained hitless and scoreless until the bottom of the fifth when senior Jamie Goss opened the frame with a double to deep left and was doubled home by fellow senior Ashley Campbell for the only Leatherneck run of the game.
The Fighting Leatherneck defense used back-to-back three up, three down innings in the sixth and the seventh to hold UMKC at bay for the remainder of the game.
In the bottom of the seventh, Western Illinois attempted a two out rally when Campbell and Megg Kelly hit back-to-back singles and moved up on a wild pitch, but a catch on the run in left ended the inning and the game.
Campbell paced the Leathernecks at the plate with a two-for-two performance. The senior also picked up the lone RBI. Briana Williams, Goss and Kelly had one hit apiece.
UMKC's Deanna Friese picked up the win in the circle tossing a complete game and allowing one earned run. Kelsey Michelini took the loss throwing 4.2 innings allowing six unearned runs.
UMKC 3, Western Illinois Softball 1
The Fighting Leathernecks stranded four runners in scoring position and saw a seventh inning comeback rally fall short for a 3-1 game two loss to UMKC.
The Kangaroos used a two-out rally in the top of the fourth to end the pitcher's duel between Western Illinois' Hailey Bickford and UMKC's Cinda Ramos. A single followed by a triple to right center equaled the team's first earned run of the day.
Following a scoreless fifth and sixth, UMKC used four hits to add two insurance runs and extend its lead to 3-0 heading into the bottom of the seventh.
In the final half inning of the ballgame, Western Illinois' offense gained momentum when Kelsey Michelini reached second on a two-base error and Teagan Walsh singled to right. Briana Williams followed with a RBI single to left ending the shut out bid of Ramos. Two fly outs ended the comeback charge for the Leathernecks and gave the contest its final score of 3-1.
Ramos recorded the win in the circle for the Kangaroos, while Bickford dropped to 9-12 on the season.
Ashley Campbell extended her hit streak to four games following her one-for-three performance in game two and Williams extended her hit streak to three games after a one-for-three effort tallying the lone Leatherneck RBI and stolen base. Emma Jarrell and Walsh earned the remainder of the hits for Western Illinois going two-for-four and one-for-three, respectively.
