VERMILLION, S.D. - South Dakota completed the series sweep over Western Illinois winning the finale 11-3 after five innings of play. The loss marks the first sweep of the 2012 season for Western, and brings the Leathernecks to 23-25 overall, and 13-8 in Summit League play.
The Fighting Leatherneck offense started the final game of the series off with a bang scoring three runs in the top of the first.
Briana Williams singled to open the frame, followed by KC Dunne and Jamie Goss each reaching on a fielder's choice to put runners at the corners for Lia Romeo. Romeo singled up the middle, and Ashley Campbell followed with a two RBI single to right for the 3-0 early advantage.
The Coyotes responded in the bottom of the first using a hit and an error to plate two unearned runs and bring them within one of Western Illinois.
In the bottom of the second, South Dakota took the lead with two runs on four hits and never looked back adding six more in the bottom of the third. The Coyotes won in walk-off fashion in the fifth when a double to left scored their 11th run of the contest and triggered the 11-3, run rule victory.
Hailey Bickford took the loss in the circle falling to 9-11 on the year, while South Dakota's Erica Denney picked up her second win of the series.
Romeo picked up three singles, all up the middle, and one RBI in the contest. Williams was also perfect at the plate going two-for-two with a walk, and Campbell was the RBI leader with two in her one-for-two performance.
The Leathernecks return to Mary Ellyn McKee Stadium for the final Summit League series of the season against UMKC on Saturday and Sunday (May 5-6). Saturday's doubleheader is slated to begin at 12 p.m. and Sunday's single game starts at 12 p.m. It is also Senior Weekend for Ashley Campbell and Jamie Goss.
