CEDAR CITY, Utah, 9/15/12 – The Southern Utah University Women’s Soccer program hosted a special alumni game on Saturday giving fans a chance to see former T-Birds square off against the current team. The game provided plenty of entertaining play, as the current Thunderbirds proved to be too much for their predecessors, claiming a 7-1 victory.

“This event lets people who follow the soccer team see where the former players are now and also gives those players a chance to come back and see the changes that have taken place here,” commented SUU head coach Becky Hogan.

The Thunderbirds from the past looked excited to be back out on the pitch as they notched the game’s first goal in the fourteenth minute. The alumni took a 1-0 advantage as couple of recent members of the SUU soccer team combined for the score as Elyse Osborne found her former teammate Riley Bassett from just in front of the net.

“It was tiring, but it was fun,” said Bassett after the game. “It felt just like old times.”

The current T-Birds quickly answered with a goal from senior forward Missy Lazcano to even the score at 1-1. Freshman Kaeligh Bosen then tallied back-to-back scores for SUU and Nancy Brich added another goal in the closing minutes of the half to put their side out in front 4-1 at the break.

Bosen rang up her third goal for a hat-trick early in the second period, and Madison Wood and Amanda Humphreys each chipped in score to set the final count at 7-1.

“It was so fun, it reminded me of all the good memories I have here at SUU,” said former Thunderbird Kristen Fronk. “It was fun to come back and see some of the girls that I played with.”

In the end it was a great day of soccer for Southern Utah, and fun for everyone involved.

SUU will now shift its attention to the upcoming week as it prepares to begin its first season of competition in the Big Sky Conference. The T-Birds will be at Northern Arizona on Friday, Sept. 21 to take on the Lumberjacks at 7 p.m.
