CEDAR CITY, Utah - Southern Utah University softball saw Brigham Young University score early in each game and were unable to keep pace with the Cougars, falling 13-5 and 7-2 at home on Tuesday afternoon. The losses put the Thunderbirds with an overall record of 28-21 on the year.

In game 1, BYU scored runs in each inning, including three in the first and two in the second to build a 5-0 lead until Southern Utah broke through with some runs in the bottom of the second. Terysa Dyer led off the frame with a double and later came around to score on an RBI single off the bat of Haylee Hoch. SUU later scored in the frame on a sacrifice fly by Megan Gurski to cut the margin to 5-2.

Runs by the Cougars in the third and fourth stretched the lead to nine runs, but Southern Utah continued to fight and cut into the BYU advantage with a solo home run by Kadi Henderson in the bottom of the fourth. The Thunderbirds had runners on first and second with nobody out as the inning progressed, but were unable to find a hit to score any more runs.

Two more runs by Brigham Young in the top of the fifth increased the Cougar advantage to 13-4 and a late rally by Southern Utah looked as though the team would fight off a run-rule finish. Mikkel Griffin led off the fifth with a walk and later scored the first of two Thunderbird runs in the frame on an RBI single by Dyer. A second RBI single by Kadi Henderson scored Southern Utah's second run of the inning and put runners at first and second with only one out on the board. However, the runners were stranded on base with the game ending on a fly ball and strikeout.

BYU scored early again in game 2, with three runs in the first and a run in the second to build a 4-0 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth inning when Kelsey Bryant put up Southern Utah's first run on an RBI single, scoring Mallory Hyland-Wilkinson who had led off the frame with a double.

The Cougars answered the run with three in the top of the seventh, making the score 7-1. The Thunderbirds capped their scoring with a run in the bottom of the inning, capitalizing on a BYU error. Tessa Loewen recorded an RBI double that scored fellow freshman and Canadian, Megan Gurski, who had picked up the one base error leading off the inning.

Southern Utah will wrap up its regular season next weekend when the Thunderbirds travel to Fargo, N.D. for a three-game conference series with North Dakota State. Fans can follow the games via live stat links that are anticipated to be available online at
