Jackrabbits shutout Cardinals
SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The South Dakota State women’s soccer team won their first game of the season by shutting out Lamar 3-0. Three different Jackrabbits scored in the game.
SDSU was able to put the pressure on Lamar early and often. Stacy Guijarro recorded three shots within the first 20 minutes of the game; two of them were on goal.
The Jackrabbits offense kept firing on all cylinders as Darci Miller recorded her first goal of the year in the 32nd minute. Miller scored off a rebound in the penalty box.
Nicole Inskeep kept the Cardinals off the board as she saved four shots in the first half.
In the first half alone the Jackrabbits outshot the Cardinals 11-4.
SDSU carried their momentum into the second half. Caylee Costello headed a ball off a deflection and into the net for her first goal of the season. Her goal gave the Jacks a 3-0 lead.
Head coach Lang Wedemeyer shared his thoughts on the day by saying, “It was great to get the first win of the season and great to get three goals on the day. We are still a ways from being the championships team we aspire to be, but today was a good step forward.”
The SDSU defense kept the Lamar offense in check during the second half. Lamar did not register a single shot in the final 45 minutes. The Jackrabbits were able to shutdown Kimmy Albeno and Kristin Bos. Albeno owns the school record in goals with 19, while Bos is third overall with 16.
Inskeep won her first career game in yellow and blue.
Overall the Jackrabbits posted 17 total shots, 10 of those were on goal.
SDSU improves to 1-2-0 on the season, while Lamar falls to 1-2-0.
The Jackrabbits will be back in action on Sunday as they conclude the University-San Antonio Tournament with their match against Sam Houston State. The Jacks will take the field against the Bearkats on Sunday at 10:30 a.m.
