Garner wins, Jacks take fourth

MUNCIE, Ind. – On the final day of The Summit League Outdoor Track and Field Championships the Jackrabbit women showed a team effort from start to finish. Brooke Garner added to her hammer throw title with a discus throw on Saturday.

It felt like 2011 for Garner on Saturday after she won the discus. Garner won the event with her mark of 168’ 8.00”. At the 2011 Summit League Outdoor Championships, Garner won both the hammer and the discus throws. With her win on Saturday, Garner has 32 career victories as a Jackrabbit. During the 2013 outdoor season she won seven events.

Meghan Lambert was the lone Jackrabbit to compete in the triple jump. Lambert recorded a distance of 34’ 4.75” in her jump.

The 4x100-meter dash had one of most exciting finishes on the day. In the final 50 meters of the race, Carly Carper who was running as the anchor for the Jacks was on pace to finish fifth. Carper was able to overcome a three-meter deficit to pass Omaha and South Dakota. The Jacks clocked in at 46.51, which is an improvement of their time of 46.71 that was set at the Drake Relays. Gina Fritz, Ashley Odegaard, Megan Bren were the three other Jackrabbits to make up the team.

In the 1,500-meter run, three Jackrabbits found the top-ten. Tera Potts finished in 4:43.26 to place to fifth, Laura Lawton was less than a second behind Potts to finish sixth (4:43.76). In ninth was Brooke Peterson who ran a time of 4:48.51.

Bren also ran the 400-meter dash and placed seventh with a time of 57.20.

After running a time of 11.81 on Friday, Carper was unable to capture or at least tie the school record on Saturday. In the 100-meter dash, Carper finished third overall with her time of 11.92.

Bren and Carper also ran in the 200-meter dash. Bren placed seventh (24.89) and Carper took eighth (25.62).

South Dakota State was well represented in the 800-meter run; the Jacks had five runners in the race. Krista Creager was the top finisher for the Jacks with her time of 2:16.52. Creager placed fifth in the event. The Jackrabbits had the other four runners finish eighth through 11th. Jessica Eibs took eighth (2:17.11), Bobbie McLaury finished in ninth (2:19.52), Samantha Anderson claimed tenth (2:21.95) and in 11th was Karley Konkol (2:23.95).

Lori Foltz finished in 1:05.19 in the 400-meter hurdles. Foltz took seventh in the event.

In the 5,000-meter run, Erin Hargens and Courtney Neubert were the two runners representing SDSU. Hargens finished ninth with her time 17:48.41 and Neubert claimed 11th.

The final event on the day for the Jacks was the 4x400-meter relay. SDSU placed fifth overall with a time of 3:51.13. The team was comprised for Fritz, Jessica McDonald, Odegaard and Bren.

The Jackrabbits finished in fourth place with 107 points.

SDSU had eight athletes named to the All-Summit Team.

Next up for the Jacks is the NCAA West Regional on May 23-25 in Austin, Texas. The top-48 individual events will qualify and the top-24 relay teams will also make the cut.
