PAPILLION, Neb. – South Dakota State scored runs in each of its last five innings at the plate, overcoming an early deficit to defeat Oakland, 6-4, in the finale of a four-game Summit League baseball series Sunday afternoon at Fricke Field.

In earning a split of the series, the Jackrabbits improved to 21-14 overall and 7-5 in The Summit League. Oakland dropped to 11-27 overall, 6-8 in league play.

The Golden Grizzlies were the aggressors early, taking a lead three batters into the game as Mike Carson connected on a solo home run to left field off Jackrabbit starter Adam Bray. In his next at-bat, Carson led off the fourth inning with a double down the left-field line and later scored on a groundout to put Oakland ahead 2-0.

SDSU cut the deficit in half with a run in the home half of the fourth on a run-scoring double by Scott Splett that plated Al Robbins.

Oakland built the lead back to two in the fifth without the benefit of a hit. An error along with three consecutive walks around a wild pitch gave the Golden Grizzlies a 3-1 advantage.

The Jackrabbit comeback began in the fifth inning as Eric Danforth lined a solo home run to left. SDSU took the lead in the sixth, stringing together four consecutive two-out singles, including a run-scoring hit by Aaron Machbitz that chased Golden Grizzly starter Chris Van Dyke, before Andrew Melton walked with the bases loaded to give the Jackrabbits a 4-3 lead.

SDSU capitalized on two Oakland errors for an insurance run in the seventh as Splett notched his third hit of the game to score Jake Ratz. The Jackrabbits tacked on another run in the eighth as Melton singled, moved to second on a sacrifice and scored on a looping single to left by Zach Coppola.

Oakland’s Trent Drumheller tripled with one out in the ninth off Jackrabbit closer J.D. Moore and scored on a sacrifice fly by Mike Brosseau. However, Moore struck out Carson to end the game for his eighth save of the season.

Daniel Telford and Daniel Marra each notched two of the Jackrabbits’ 13 hits, with Telford extending his hitting streak to 12 games. Carson and Robby Enslen tallied two of Oakland’s nine hits.

Bray worked the first six innings, walking four and striking out three as he recorded his fifth win of the season. Moore fanned three batters in earning a two-inning save.

The Jackrabbits resume Summit League action Friday, opening a four-game series at Western Illinois.
