SDSU captures first tourney win since 2009

MACOMB, ILL. -- The Jackrabbit men’s golf team captured the program’s first tournament victory in nearly four years with a first place finish at the Beu/Mussatto Invitational.

The last tourney win for the SDSU men’s golf team came at the same event, hosted by Western Illinois, back on April 20-21, 2009.

The Jacks posted rounds of 300, 285 and 304 for a two day total of 889 at the 6,862-yard, par-72 Harry Mussatto Golf Course in Macomb, Ill. 

SDSU beat fellow Summit League member IUPUI by two strokes to win the tourney, which featured a 15-team field.

Hudson Carpenter placed in 2nd, tying a career-best finished. The junior was two-over for the tournament and carded rounds of 74, 70 and 74 (218) to lead the Jacks.

This weekend's finish is the sixth top-10 for Carpenter this season and ninth of his career, moving him into second place on the school's all-time list for top-10's in a season and a career.

Joining Carpenter in the top-10, Miles Knutsen tied for 8th place with rounds of 72, 73 and 75 (220). The freshman has three top-10's this season.

Junior Lukas Davison tied for 11th place, the best finish of his college career. Davison had rounds of 75, 69 and 78 for a two-day total of 222.

Senior Greg Fehrman and sophomore Dillon Schultz tied for 43rd place with a three-round final score of 232. Fehrman shot rounds of 81, 74 and 77, while Schultz had scores of 79, 73 and 80.

Competing as an individual, A.C. Sitter carded rounds of 75, 73 and 81 (229) and tied for 23rd place, the freshman’s second career top-25.

Seniors Brian Wynia and David Smith also golfed unattached. Wynia posted rounds of 77, 79 and 79 (235) to finish tied for 58th place. Smith tied for 77th place with rounds of 80, 81 and 83 (244).

IUPUI’s Santiango Ruiz was tournament champion, edging Carpenter by one stroke with rounds of 73, 74 and 70 (217).

Up next for SDSU is the COG Mizzou Tiger Intercollegiate, hosted by University of Missouri, on April 8-9, 2013, in Columbia, Mo.
