GREELEY, Colo. – Layne Somsen struck out eight batters over six innings and Daniel Marra and Zach Coppola each tallied three hits to lead South Dakota State to a 5-1 victory over Northern Colorado in the opening game of a three-game baseball series Friday afternoon at Jackson Field.

The Jackrabbits improved to 11-8 overall, while Northern Colorado dropped to 7-12 on the season.

SDSU opened the scoring with an unearned run in the top of the third. Paul Jacobson reached on an error and scored on a two-out double by Scott Splett. The Jackrabbits added a run on four singles in the fourth inning, with Coppola driving in Marra with a base hit to left-center field.

The Bears trimmed the deficit in half with their lone run of the game in the fifth inning. Landon Moseley walked with one out, stole second and scored on Dylan Banach’s single up the middle.

The Jackrabbits responded with three runs in the top of the sixth to put the game out of reach. Coppola again plated Marra with a single for the first run of the frame, then scored when Jacobson reached on UNC’s second error of the game. Jacobson later scored on the back end of a double steal with Andrew Melton.

Somsen struck out two batters in each of the second, third and fourth innings in earning his second victory of the season, upping his season total to 38 K’s in 34 2/3 innings. The senior right-hander surrendered five hits and walked three.

Chad Hodges pitched three shutout innings in relief to earn his first career save. Hodges allowed two hits and walked one.

SDSU finished with a 12-7 advantage in hits, including two by Melton. The Jackrabbits stole five bases in the game, including three by Jacobson, who extended his hitting streak to 13 games with a first-inning single.

Banach and Jensen Park each tallied two hits for UNC.

The two teams are slated to play the middle game of the three-game series Saturday afternoon. First pitch is set for noon Mountain Time.
