Equestrian falls in championship bracket
MARTIN, Tenn. – The South Dakota State equestrian team ended the Independent Tournament in second place behind host UT-Martin on Saturday, after the Skyhawks downed the Jackrabbits 12-4 in the championship meet.
The loss ends the Jackrabbits regular season, and sends them to NCEA Nationals on April 18-20 with a 7-7 record for the season.
“Today’s loss was disappointing,” head coach Megan Rossiter said. “But we’re going to put it behind us and focus on preparing for nationals.”
In the equitation over fences and horsemanship events, the Jackrabbits tied the Skyhawks 2-2, while in both equitation on the flat and reining, the home team swept the Jacks 4-0.
In equitation over fences, sophomore Jordan Goodall won her point with a total score of 152 over UT-Martin rider Kara Bergenty’s score of 150. Freshman Marielle Golden won her point in the equitation over fences arena as well with a score of 162 to Skyhawk rider Reid Rickeet’s 160.
For the horsemanship arena, senior Kelsey Champagne’s total score of 143.5 earned her a point over Skyhawk Michelle Chulock’s 140.5 total. Junior Shelby Webb scored a total of 145.5 to beat out UT-Martin rider Candice Fulcher’s 129.5.
“It was a tough loss for our ladies today,” assistant coach Kamerra Brown said. “They’re a tough group though, and their focus will be completely devoted to the next show.”
With the regular season now over for the Jackrabbits, the team now waits for the announcement of teams going to the NCEA National Championships in Waco, Texas on April 18-20.
