The Jackrabbit men’s and women’s golf teams are headed to the desert for the spring season-opener to host the 2013 Jackrabbit Invitational March 11-12 in Primm, Nev.

The 54-hole event will be held at the Primm Valley Golf Club, with the men on the 7,131-yard, par-72 Desert Course and the women on the 6,945-yard, par-71 Lakes Course.

The tourney begins with a shotgun start for the first round on Sunday at 9:30 a.m. CT, followed by the second round in the afternoon, with another shotgun start at 9:30 a.m. CT for the final round on Monday.

Men’s field (14 teams): SDSU, North Dakota State, Illinois State, Drake, Youngstown State, Idaho, Weber State, Oakland, Southern Illinois, Augustana, Air Force, Creighton, Arkansas State and North Dakota.

Women’s field (13 teams): SDSU, North Dakota State, Drake, Youngstown State, Oakland, Southern Illinois, Creighton, Arkansas State, North Dakota, Western Illinois, Houston Baptist, Montana State and Eastern Washington.

For the men, senior Greg Fehrman and junior Hudson Carpenter will look to pick up right where they left off after the 2012 fall season. Fehrman posted a 74.50 average over four events and 10 rounds, with his top finish a tie for fifth at the rain-shortened Querencia Cabo Collegiate.

Carpenter was the top golfer for the Jacks this past fall, posting a 72.90 average in four events and 10 rounds. His best showing came at the Jackrabbit Fall Invitational where he finished as the runner-up, one stroke off the lead, with rounds of 70, 74 and 69 (213).

The women’s team will once again lean on senior Morgan Fitts as they enter the spring season. Fitts had a solid fall with a scoring average of 77.83 over 12 rounds. She posted two top-25 finishes in four events, including runner-up at the Jackrabbit Fall Invitational.

Though SDSU hasn’t played in a tournament yet in 2013, the Jacks have a few golfers near the top of the Summit League leader board after the fall campaign.

Carpenter is fifth in overall scoring for the men, with Fehrman cracking the top-15 in 13th.

Fitts stands in fourth place on the Summit charts.

Other Summit teams competing: NDSU (M&W), Oakland (M&W) and Western Illinois (W)

Both the men’s and women’s teams return to action March 25-26 at the Cal State-Bakersfield Invitational in Bakersfield, Calif.
