Jacks travel to Nebraska and NDSU

BROOKINGS, S.D. – The South Dakota State track and field teams are back on the road again this weekend as they travel to Nebraska and North Dakota for two separate meets. Nebraska is hosting the Husker Invite; North Dakota State is hosting the Thundering Herd Classic. 


About the Husker Invite:


The Husker Invite will take place on February 1st and 2nd. Top teams from across the nation will be in attendance. Notable teams that will be competing are: Arkansas (men are ranked number one overall), Auburn (men are ranked number nine overall), Minnesota (men are ranked number seven overall), Texas A&M (women are ranked sixth overall) and the University of Central Florida (women are ranked ninth overall).


Luke Leischner will be the only Jackrabbit competing Friday night; he will be running in the 400-meter dash prelims. Action will start up again on Saturday at 10 a.m.


About the Thundering Herd Classic:


The University of Mary, North Dakota and North Dakota State will be competing against South Dakota State. The women's pentathlon, men's heptathlon and both men's and women's weight throws will take place Friday afternoon. The events will start at 3:15 p.m.

On Saturday the 60-meter dash hurdles will be the first event of the day. The running events will start at 10:30 a.m. The field events will start at 11:15 a.m.


Early season highlights:


Leischner posted a time of 22.13 in the 200-meter dash (Bill Bergan Invite).

LeAndre Kennedy set the third-best time in SDSU history in the 60-meter dash with a

time of 6.98 seconds (Bill Bergan Invite).

Megan Bren set a top time in SDSU history in the 60-meter dash (MSU Preseason

Open). Bren recorded a time of 7.80 seconds, which is tied for fourth with Ashley


Brooke Garner won the weight throw with a mark of 59’ 10.50” (USD Alumni Meet).

SDSU took the top three spots in the 60-meter dash with Gina Fritz, Bren and Odegaard

all going one-two-three (MSU Preseason Open).

Bren and Fritz went one-two in the 200-meter dash (MSU Preseason Open).


Among the best in the Summit:


Kennedy is tied for third in the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.98.


Bren ranks fifth in the 60-meter dash with her time of 7.80.


Leischner’s time of 22.13 in the 200-meter dash ranks second.


Fritz has the third-best 200-meter dash time (25.05).


Phillip LaVallee has the fifth-best time in the 800-meter dash (1:55.35).


In the mile Michael Krnsak ranks second with his time of 4:10.66.


Tera Potts is second overall in the mile with her time of 4:57.85.


Trent Lusignan ranks second in the 3000-meter run with a time of 8:24.14.


Erin Hargens is fourth on the women’s side of 3000-meters with her time of 10:06.76.


The SDSU women’s 4x400-meter relay team ranks fourth with their time of 3:55.29.


Connor Berg ranks fifth in the high jump with his height of 6’ 4.75”.


Nathaniel Schaefer is tied for fifth in the pole vault with his height of 15’ 1.00”.


McKenzie Johnson ranks fifth in the shot put with her mark of 47’ 6.50”.


Garner has the second-best mark in the weight throw (59’ 10.50”).


Up next:


The Jackrabbits will travel back to Ames, Iowa to compete in the ISU Classic hosted by Iowa State. The ISU Classic takes place on February 8th and 9th.


Championships around the corner:


The Summit League Indoor Championships are now just less than a month away. The University of South Dakota is the host for this year’s event. Competition will take place on February 24th and 25th.
