WEST ORANGE, N.J. – Rising sophomore Max Greyserman fired a six-under 207 to claim medalist honors at the 94th New Jersey State Golf Association Open Championship. The South Hills, N.J., native recorded rounds of 71-68-68 to post a three-shot victory at Essex County Country Club in West Orange, N.J.
In Thursday's final round, Greyserman got off to a hot start with birdies No. 2 and No. 3 to move to two-under early in the day. He added a birdie on the par 5 seventh hole before dropping shots with birdies on No. 9 and No. 11.
Greyserman recovered with birdies on the par 4 14th hole and the par 3 15th to move back to three-under with three holes remaining. He capped off the tournament with three straight pars to secure the victory.
Thursday's round of 68 followed a second round 68 from the Duke rising sophomore. His second round featured five front nine birdies including four straight from No. 5-8.
Greyserman also had five birdies during an opening round 71, but was thwarted by a triple-bogey on the par 4 12th hole.
Greyserman took advantage of the front nine at Essex County CC carding 11 of his 15 birdies on the opening nine holes. He was also strong on the par 5s finishing the event six-under on the par 5s.
As a freshman, Greyserman posted a 74.9 stroke average with a pair of top-20 finishes and seven rounds of even-par or better golf. His best showing was a tie for fourth at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate.
