CLEMSON, S.C. – The Duke varsity eight clocked two two-four finishes, and the varsity four placed second behind Iowa on the second day of the Clemson Invitational Sunday on Lake Hartwell.
The varsity four finished at 8:07.6 to trail only Iowa (8:01.4) for the top spot. A late push thrust the Duke four past No. 16 Cornell (8:08.2) and Dartmouth (8:08.6) by one second for the program’s top finish of the weekend. The varsity four shaved nearly a full minute off their time from the first race of the weekend Saturday.
Duke’s varsity eight also improved on its Saturday performance, placing fourth behind No. 16 Cornell (6:51.5), Louisville (6:53.9) and Dartmouth (6:55.9) in the first race of the day with a 7:00.6. That time was enough to place ahead of Columbia (7:02.2), Iowa (7:05.3) and Oklahoma (7:06.3).
After their first race, the V8 crew turned around and logged its best finish of the weekend in the final session Sunday, placing third behind Oregon State (7:08.8) and No. 14 Harvard (7:11.2) with a time of 7:20.4. For the weekend, the Duke varsity eight finished solely behind teams who were either ranked in the CRCA/US Rowing Top 20 or were among the top four vote-getters after the top 20 teams.
Duke’s 3V8 turned in its second top-four finish of the weekend and broke the eight-minute barrier Sunday, logging a 7:58.6 in the early morning session.
Just one more regatta separates Duke from the ACC Championship. The Blue Devils will compete in the UVA Invitational this Saturday, April 26, on Lake Monticello in Charlottesville, Va. The ACC Championship will take place over two days on Friday and Saturday, May 16-17 on Lake Hartwell.
