Duke Storms to Five Wins at Philly Invitational

DURHAM, N.C. – Led by a 16-2 showing from sophomore Charles Copti and a 15-3 performance from freshman Christopher Monti, the Duke men’s fencing team went 5-1 at the Philadelphia Invitational Saturday in The Coach Dave Micahnik Fencing Center.

Copti and Monti led the sabers to five wins as the Blue Devils collected wins over Lafayette (24-3), Drew (26-1), Haverford (20-7), Sacred Heart (16-11) and NJIT (23-4). Duke’s lone loss came at the hands of No. 8 Penn, 22-5. The five wins pushed the Duke men’s team’s record to 7-4 following their first two meets.

The Blue Devil sabers and foils both went 5-1 with their lone losses coming against Penn. The epees finished 4-2 with wins over all but Sacred Heart and Penn.

Copti and Monti keyed the sabers to wins of 9-0 over Haverford and NJIT, 8-2 over Drew and 7-2 over Lafayette and Sacred Heart. The duo opened the meet by combining for 24 consecutive wins and now lead Duke in victories, with Monti sporting a 23-10 record and Copti a 22-6 mark.

Copti and Monti were two of six Blue Devils with double-digit victories at the Philadelphia Invitational, joining epees Joseph Lam (12-6) and Rod Shayesteh (11-4), and epees Eddie Chen (10-4) and Alessio Santoro (10-5). Eleven of Duke’s 12 competing fencers finished with winning records, while none of those 12 finished under .500.

The Duke women will fence at the Philadelphia Invitational Sunday beginning at 8:30 a.m. vs. NJIT. The women will also face Haverford (10 a.m.), Cornell (11:30 a.m.), Sacred Heart (1:30 a.m.) and Penn (3 p.m.).
