DURHAM, N.C. – Duke redshirt senior offensive tackle Perry Simmons was named to the Capital One Academic All-America first team, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced Thursday.

The Academic All-America citation is the second for Simmons, who earned second team honors in 2012. A native of Raleigh, N.C., Simmons owns a 3.83 grade point average as a civil engineering major. He has started all 49 games of his collegiate career at right tackle for the Blue Devils, a streak that is the longest among any active player in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Simmons is the sixth Duke player to earn multiple Academic All-America honors and the seventh to receive first team honors. Also an All-ACC third team selection this season, he is the third Blue Devil in school history to receive Academic All-America and All-ACC honors in the same season, repeating a feat he accomplished as an All-ACC honorable mention pick in 2012.

Simmons has helped No. 20 Duke capture the ACC Coastal Division title and a berth to the ACC Championship game against No. 1 Florida State this Saturday, Dec. 7, at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, N.C. The championship berth followed a school-record 10 victories for the Blue Devils, who defeated two ranked opponents, cracked the Associated Press top 25 for the first time since 1994, and are currently in the midst of an eight-game winning streak.

Simmons has helped pave the way for a Duke offense that averages 33.7 points and 422.2 total yards per game while scoring 24 rushing touchdowns and 23 passing touchdowns. The Blue Devils have given up just 14 sacks in 12 games for the third fewest in the ACC while averaging 179.9 rushing yards per game, which is the most in the David Cutcliffe era.

The Academic All-America citation is one of many for Simmons, who was also selected as a National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete and is a candidate for the NFF’s William V. Campbell Trophy that honors the top football student-athlete in the nation. Additionally, he is a three-time Academic All-ACC Football Team selection and a four-time member of the ACC Academic Honor Roll.
