DURHAM, N.C. – Duke sophomore placekicker Ross Martin was named the national placekicker of the week by College Football Performance Awards (CFPA) after helping Duke top No. 16 Virginia Tech on the road this past weekend, the website announced Monday.

A 5-9, 185-pound native of Solon, Ohio, Martin hit field goals from 51 and 53 yards against the Hokies, burying his career-long 53-yarder as time expired at the end of the first half to give Duke a 6-0 lead at halftime. He would add an extra point following Anthony Boone’s touchdown run in the third quarter as Duke held on to top the Hokies, 13-10, for the program’s first road win over a ranked opponent since 1971.

Martin has hit five consecutive field goals and is 6-of-8 (75.0) this season while knocking down all 33 extra point attempts. His two 50-yarders against Virginia Tech made him the first FBS kicker this season to hit two attempts of 50 or more yards in the same game and moved him into a tie for second place on Duke’s career list of 50-plus yard field goals with four.

Following a bye week, the Blue Devils (6-2, 2-2 ACC) will host N.C. State Saturday, Nov. 9, in Wallace Wade Stadium.
