Hello Duke Fans!

Yesterday was a day filled with shopping and exploration! We spent the morning in Pordenone’s flea market. By midday we took the train in to Venice, “The Floating City.” We had to make our way through Venice’s small streets, past stores and restaurants to San Marco Plaza.

The whole city is just a huge maze, so you never really know where you’re going! Everyone shopped and enjoyed dinner at the small cafes. Some of us even rode in Gondolas!

Today we spent our morning in Verona, which is famous for the Capulet and the Montague families (yes, the families are real, but Shakespeare’s love story is not). We saw Juliet’s balcony as well as the letters that people leave to her about their own Romeos.

After a bus ride into Milan, we made our way to the Italian Olympic Training Center where we played Club Italia. Their scrappy defense and smart shots made for a tough and competitive match.

Duke vs. Club Italia Stat Leaders:
Chelsea Cook: 17 kills, 2 block solo, 8 block assist
Emily Sklar: 8 kills, 5 aces
Jeme Obeime: 7 kills
Breanna Atkinson: 6 kills
Christina Vucich: 12 assists, 6 block assists, 4 digs, 4 aces
Maggie Deichmeister: 15 assists
Ali McCurdy: 17 digs, 16 aces
Kelsey Williams: 4 aces

“I really liked the focus our team had on the court today and the efficient yet relaxed feel we had as well," said head coach Jolene Nagel. "We served well today and that allowed us to score some points off serve. The team has taken advantage of this opportunity that we had to tour and the coaches have seen individual as well as team growth. We’re excited to see the development!"

Club Italia gave us a little Italia banner, which we will be sure to hang up in our locker room to remind us of this amazing trip! The training center facility hosted our team for dinner. We were served bread, salad, penne pasta and chicken.

Maggie Deichmeister’s Thoughts on the Day
“The street performers in Verona were really funny. The first one we saw was dressed up as the Statue of Liberty, which reminded me of home. But the funniest was the man dressed up as a baby. Jeme Obeime and I went up close and took a picture with him. He scared us a little when he grabbed our legs from under the stroller. The whole crowd laughed at us…even the little kids!”
