CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -  Duke sweeps all four of the women’s throws events on its way to earning six titles on Saturday at North Carolina’s Kent Taylor- Joe Hilton Invitational.

“Coach B.J. Linnenbrink [Duke’s throws coach] has them peaking at just the right time,” Director of Track and Field Norm Ogilvie commented.  “and we are excited to see these women compete at ACCs next weekend.”

Sophomore Michelle Anumba earned two titles on the day in the hammer throw and shot put.  The Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., native threw a new school record mark of 187-04(57.11) in the hammer throw and a season high 53-9.25 (16.39) in the shot put.

Junior Andrea Hopkins finished first in the javelin with a throw of 143-11 (43.87).  The Lake Oswego, Ore., native will look to use this momentum to defend her conference title next week in Charlottesville, Va.

In the women’s discus, sophomore Erica Brand earned a mark of 166-09 (50.84) on her sixth and final throw to grab the first place slot by one centimeter and secure the Blue Devil sweep.  The sophomore has proven to be extremely consistent this season, hitting marks of 50.89 and 50.77 in the past two weeks.

For the men, senior Michael Barbas earned a season high mark in the shot put on his way to a first place finish with a throw of 57-6.5 (17.54).  He was the only top finisher on the men’s side for the Blue Devils.

On the track, senior Cydney Ross earned a first place finish in the women’s 800 meters by completing her first race of 2012 in 2:11.02.  She was closely followed by freshman Abby Farley  who finished second in 2:12.56.

In the women’s 400 meters, freshman Elizabeth Kerpon completed the distance in a collegiate-best time of 55.29 which landed her in second place.  Fellow freshman Lauren Hansson crossed the line in fourth place with a personal record time of 55.90.

After using today as their final tune-up, the Blue Devils are now set to compete in the 2012 Outdoor ACC Championships on April 19-21 in Charlottesville, Va.  More information will be available soon at www.GoDuke.com.
