NEW ORLEANS (July 26, 2012) -- The Sun Belt Conference honored 131 FIU student-athletes for achieving grade point averages of 3.0 or better during the 2011-2012 academic year, the league announced on July 26.
The 131 honorees marks an increase from last year's total for FIU, as 100 Panthers were honored for their academic successes in 2010-11.
Thirty-eight FIU Panthers were named to the Sun Belt Commissioner's List, which honors all student-athletes recording a 3.5 GPA or better during the 2011-12 academic year. Leading the way was swimming & diving with six honorees, while women's soccer totaled six members and volleyball had five student-athletes earn a 3.5 GPA or higher.
Ninety-three FIU student-athletes were named to the Sun Belt Conference Academic Honor Roll, which honors those maintaining a 3.0-3.49 GPA. Women's track and field/cross country led all sports with 16 student-athletes earning honor roll recognition, while both the baseball and swimming & diving squads placed 12 Panthers apiece on the list, and football notched 11 honorees.
In total, swimming & diving led all FIU squads with 21 honorees, while women's track and field/cross country produced 18 academic award winners. Also reaching double-digits in academic honorees were baseball (14), football (13), volleyball (12), women's soccer (12), softball (11), and women's basketball (10).
