MIAMI (July 26, 2012) -- With the 2012 Olympic Games in London under way, three former FIU student-athletes will represent their respective countries.
Former FIU point guard Iva Ciglar (2005-08) helped the Croatian women’s basketball team make history. Her nine points in the second half against Canada helped lead Croatia to a 59-56 win, a victory which led to the country's first-ever spot in the Olympics. Ciglar finished her FIU career ranked fifth in three-pointers made (120) and fourth in assists (399).
Defender Ifeoma Dieke (1999-2002) will be hitting the pitch for Great Britain. A member of Scotland’s national women’s soccer team, Dieke is American-born, but moved to Scotland with her family when she was three years old. She currently plays for Vittsjo GIK of the Swedish Damallsvenskan. Dieke earned First Team All-Sun Belt Conference honors while playing soccer for FIU.
Ronald Forbes (2005-08) will be representing the Cayman Islands in the 110-meter hurdles, as he makes his second appearance at the Olympic Games. Forbes, who trains in Miami, is looking to improve upon his performance in Beijing where he made it to the quarterfinal round. While competing for FIU, Forbes earned All-America honors in the 110-meter hurdles.
