MIAMI (May 17, 2012) - The National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) has announced the 2012 NFCA Division I All-Region teams, as FIU senior outfielder Ashley McClain earned All-South Region Second Team recognition.
The honor marks the third NFCA All-Region nod of McClain's career, as she was named to the All-South Region First Team in 2010 and 2011. With the accolade, she becomes the first player in FIU softball history to earn NFCA All-Region honors more than twice.
McClain led FIU to its fourth-consecutive winning season in 2012, as she led the Panthers in most offensive categories, including batting average (.356), total bases (95), hits (57), RBI (37) runs (35), doubles (12) and home runs (8). The three-time, All-Sun Belt Conference First Team pick will graduate as FIU's career leader in batting average (.357), total bases (415), RBI (161), home runs (33) and doubles (53), and her 253 career hits rank second all-time.
A native of Brandon, Fla., McClain owns numerous FIU single-season records, including three of the top-four batting averages, as her .409 average in 2011 marks a Panther softball all-time best. McClain became FIU softball's first-ever Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year in 2010, and the outfielder owns single-season program bests for doubles (17 - 2010); hits (74 - 2011); and RBI (56 - 2010).
A total of 263 players representing 129 different institutions comprise this season's NFCA regional teams, including first and second teams for each region. McClain was one of eight players recognized from the Sun Belt Conference, as Louisiana had six all-region honorees and South Alabama had one regional selection.
The all-region teams were chosen by NFCA member coaches from each region, and all the honorees will now be eligible for selection to one of three 2012 NFCA Division I All-American teams. In addition, conference pitchers and players of the year not selected to the regional teams were added for All-America consideration.
The 2012 NFCA Division I All-America teams will be announced at 5 p.m. ET on Wednesday, May 30, via NFCA.org.
