MIAMI (May 8, 2012) -- On the strength of a conference record of 15-9, the FIU softball team earned the No. 3 seed for the 2012 Sun Belt Conference Softball Championship, held May 9-12 at FAU Stadium in Boca Raton, Fla.
FIU (27-25, 15-9 SBC) will face No. 6 seed Troy (31-22. 10-14 SBC) in first round action on Wednesday, May 9, at 11 a.m., with the winner of that game set to face the winner of the No. 2 South Alabama/No. 7 ULM first round contest on Thursday, May 10, at 4 p.m. Should the Panthers fall in game one, they will face the losing team from the South Alabama/ULM game on Thursday at 11 a.m.
The SBC will use the same format as last year for the tournament which emulates the College World Series bracket. The loser of games seven and eight will switch sides of the bracket to play through the loser's bracket. The SBC tournament differs from the CWS bracket in that the SBC championship game is single elimination whereas the CWS championship round is the best two-out-of-three.

A Look Back at the 2011 SBC Championship
FIU is coming off a 1-2 outing at the 2011 Sun Belt Conference Championship as the fourth-seeded Panthers dropped a 4-0 opening round decision to Troy before defeating Middle Tennessee, 11-5, in extra innings to stay alive. FIU would then suffer a 4-2 season-ending decision to South Alabama. Top-seeded and regular season champion Louisiana went on to win the 2011 SBC Championship title, marking the Ragin' Cajuns' fourth-straight and 11th tournament championship in the last 12 years. Prior to the start of tournament play, Championship Family Night took place at Louisiana's Lamson Park as three Panthers earned First Team All-Sun Belt Conference honors (Ashley McClain - OF, Kayla Burri - SS, and Jessy Alfonso - 3B). Following the completion of the tournament, Burri was named to the SBC All-Tournament Team.
FIU in the SBC Championship
FIU owns an all-time record of 15-24 in Sun Belt Conference Championship play. Against current SBC teams, the Panthers are 0-1 versus South Alabama; an even 1-1 versus Troy, Florida Atlantic and ULM; 2-1 versus North Texas, 5-5 versus Middle Tennessee, 3-3 versus WKU and 0-10 versus Louisiana. FIU began competition in the SBC Tournament in 2000 and owns a record of 10-2 in opening-round action.
