BOCA RATON, Fla. - Six different FIU players recorded hits, but the FIU softball team was outscored in a 2-1 extra inning loss to Florida Atlantic in the final regular season game.

With the ninth-inning loss, FIU is now 6-6 in extra inning games this season.  The Golden Panthers fell to 29-27 overall and 13-11 in the Sun Belt Conference.

Junior Kasey Barrett (16-12) started for FIU and gave up six hits and two runs in eight innings of work while striking out six.  She allowed her first hit in the fifth inning.  That runner later came around to score on an RBI double by Brittany Walker to give FAU a 1-0 lead.

Senior Katie Bell led off the top of the sixth inning with an infield single.  Senior Kim Rodriguez then singled home Bell to tie the game 1-1.

Both teams had many chances to score the go-ahead run in the contest.  In the bottom of the seventh, the Owls had a runner at second with one out, but Barrett got two strikeouts to send the game to extra innings.

FAU’s Caitlyn Bliss hit a two-out triple off the top of the left field wall in the eighth inning.  Barrett then got the next batter to ground out to second base to end the inning.

FIU loaded the bases in the top of the ninth after back-to-back walks to senior Carolina Rojas and freshman Ashley McClain and a single by junior Lauren Spiers.  Sophomore Jasmine Para hit into a double play to end the inning.

FAU’s Becky Brandies led off the bottom of the ninth inning with a single and later stole second to put a runner in scoring position with no outs.  Freshman Jennifer Gniadek entered the game in relief of Barrett and struck out one batter, but with one out, the Owls hit a ball to the shortstop and Fink threw it past the first baseman, Spiers, to allow the winning run to score for FAU.

The Golden Panthers will next compete at the Sun Belt Conference Championships held in Denton, Texas on Wednesday, May 6.
