AMES, IOWA – Six members of the Duke women’s track and field team closed day one of the Iowa State Classic in Ames, Iowa, in dramatic fashion, posting first-place finishes in the distance medley relay and the 5,000. En route to the DMR’s victory, the team also set a facility and meet record.

In a race that saw three relay teams best the facility record, the contingent of sophomore Anima Banks, junior Elizabeth Kerpon, freshman Haley Meier and graduate student Audrey Huth won convincingly after recording a time of 11:06.87 over the 4,000-meter distance to take first-place in a Lied Center and meet record. Banks led off with a 3:24.9 over 1,200 meters before handing the baton to Kerpon, who covered the 400m leg in a time of 55.2. After Meier finished the 800m leg in a time of 2:07.3, Huth closed the final mile of the relay in a blistering 4:39.2. The foursome broke the previous facility record by nearly seven seconds while eclipsing the previous meet record by over nine seconds. Duke crossed the line almost six seconds ahead of second-place Minnesota. Banks, Kerpon, Meier and Huth remain third on Duke’s all-time list in the DMR, improving on their previous-best time of 11:07.85.

Graduate student Juliet Bottorff, competing in her first 5,000 of the season, showed no signs of rust at the longer distance, winning the event in a time of 15:49.80. Bottorff’s time, just .35 seconds off her own school record, ranked her fifth in the nation Friday evening. The Newark, Del., native crossed the line over four seconds ahead of the second-place finisher.

Junior Abby Farley opened competition Friday for the Blue Devils with a fifth-place finish in the 600-yard dash after running a time of 1:22.46. The Indianapolis, Ind., native is slated to return to action Saturday afternoon, competing in the 800 and the 4x400m relay.

Duke resumes competition tomorrow afternoon, with the mile scheduled to start at 1:40 p.m. (CST).
